The Journey of a Clothing Brand Built with Passion
All successful brands have a humble beginning and ours is no different. Our clothing brand Suitset began as a small idea between two people with a passion for fashion and has slowly transformed into a successful business built on creativity, determination, and hard work. Our story is how we took a chance and created a clothing company out of nothing with nothing.
The story of Suitset began when two friends who loved fashion saw that clothing was more than just fabric and stitching. Clothing can show someone’s personality, culture, and confidence. They were both always interested in trends, style, and the art of designing outfits for people who want to look their best. They would have conversations about how there were very few options for unique clothing in their area at an affordable price. Together, they decided they had to create something on their own because the demand exists.
With very little money and almost no resources but tons of energy and passion, they started a small business called a clothing store with no money behind it, no large team to help them and no fancy store to sell their clothing from. All they had was the desire to create and the belief they would be able to turn their ideas into a tangible product. Suitset began their research by investigating what types of fabrics they would use, what trends were popular in the market, and what customers like or dislike about the clothes they are buying.
The first few years were difficult for these two business owners as they managed the entire process in an extremely small area (less than 50 square feet) that served three purposes – design studio, office and storage area. Suitset completed every aspect of the operation, and one co-founder handled design and sourcing of materials, while the other received all the marketing, customer communications and orders from customers (sales) of their designs (collections) and spent an immense amount of time developing new collections, visiting fabric markets, and working with local tailors to produce new collections.
Their first collection was relatively small but remarkable in that it contained various pieces that incorporated all three of the factors (comfort, style, price) that they wanted all their customers to appreciate when they purchased something from either of them. They did not create large quantities of their designs, but rather concentrated on the quality of their original designs, thus creating a uniquely designed garment for their customers; it also meant they paid very close attention to detail of the garment in order that their customers/clients could see their level of effort and craftsmanship that went into making each individual piece.
To further market their brand, they started posting pictures on various social media accounts; they posted pictures of their designs, pictures of themselves behind-the-scenes developing their designs and pictures on how to style their garments. Over time, more and more people took notice of Suitset designs. Their two co-founders began selling to friends and family, who subsequently gave them positive feedback on their purchases, which allowed the two entrepreneurs to continue with their plans. In addition, customers telling their family and friends about the co-founders' company's products also assisted in providing the two co-founders with a way to grow their customer base through this type of organic customer acquisition.
A significant event occurred when they took part in a small local fashion exhibition where they had the opportunity to showcase their designs to a larger audience. Several attendees were impressed with how original and well-made their clothing was, leading to increased brand awareness amongst the local community.
As demand grew, the founders recognized that they would need to scale up their operations by finding additional skilled tailors and suppliers who could provide them with quality materials quickly to produce apparel at a higher rate. They also wanted to ensure that their brand identity of being fashionable, comfortable, and affordable continued as they expanded their business; this was their main focus throughout this period.
Suitset have always been challenges that accompany this path of entrepreneurship. For example, there were times when sales dropped off; fabrics were delayed; or some of the designs did not meet their expectations. However, rather than give up, the founders used these setbacks as opportunities to learn from them and refine their products. They had a strong passion for the fashion business and were committed to providing excellent service to customers, which kept them motivated throughout their journey to build a successful business.
